Unified Fire Authority (UFA) is Utah’s largest fire agency with 695 employees serving an estimated 473,921 residents in 15 municipalities and unincorporated Salt Lake County. The UFA provides service to all unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County and one municipality (Eagle Mountain) is located in Utah County.
Medical Training-many are surprised to learn the majority of our responses as firefighters are medical in nature. As a result, we place high priority on medical training and practice. One of these opportunities is our Airway Academy, a two day training of classroom instruction reviewing airway responses and protocols, followed by an opportunity in the University of Utah cadaver lab practicing on donors in the U’s Body Donor Program. Focus is on paramedics reviewing and practicing less frequent skills such as intubation, gaining IO (interosseus) access for medicine delivery, needle decompression, and emergency cricothyrotomy. EMTs are also introduced to these skills to encourage their further training in EMS.

This morning units from Unified Fire Authority, West Valley City Fire Department, South Salt Lake Fire Department, Murray Fire Department and West Jordan Fire Department responded to smoke in a commercial structure. A fire was located deep inside the structure prompting a call for a second alarm. Crews aggressively attacked and extinguished the fire.
Occasionally large fires require the efforts of multiple agencies to address the issue. It is amazing to watch this coordinated effort systematically address task after task leading to the eventual conclusion. Great work by all involved.

Today, our crews, alongside Draper and South Jordan Firefighters, faced a garage fire with an unexpected twist. As the flames spread to a firefighter’s turnout gear, fellow firefighters didn’t hesitate for a second. In a truly jaw dropping moment, they literally jumped onto the burning firefighter to help smother the flames, combining quick thinking and bravery to prevent a much worse outcome.
This is the firefighter mindset; we risk it all to save lives. When the situation is at its most dangerous, our team puts everything on the line to protect the public and each other. This act of selfless courage is what keeps our brothers and sisters safe. 🙏👨🚒👩🚒
In the event a high rise structure should experience a fire, multiple units would be dispatched from fire agencies throughout the county. The Utah Fire and Rescue Academy recently provided a county-wide training exercise where a simulated fire was reported in a six story building and units dispatched. This training took place over multiple days and locations to give nearly all on duty crews this training and experience.
